X Impersonation and Parody: Making Identity Clear to Readers

Identity policies protect users from accounts that deceive others about who is speaking. Parody, commentary, fan accounts, and satire can serve legitimate purposes, but the account’s presentation should not mislead a reasonable visitor into believing it is an official profile. Names, profile images, biographies, pinned posts, and links all contribute to the impression an account creates.

Clearly identify parody or fan status in visible profile text and avoid copying another person’s branding in a way that creates confusion. Do not use impersonation to solicit money, collect credentials, or damage someone’s reputation. When reporting a suspected impersonation, provide the profile URL and concrete examples of the misleading representation rather than relying solely on disagreement with the account’s opinions.
