X Account Security: Phishing, Session Theft, and Third-Party Apps

An account can be compromised even when its owner uses a strong password. Phishing pages, stolen session cookies, malicious browser extensions, and over-permissioned third-party applications can bypass ordinary caution. Unexpected posts, unfamiliar sessions, changed recovery details, or messages sent without the owner’s knowledge should be treated as a possible security incident.

Use a unique password, enable an available strong second factor, review active sessions, and remove app permissions that are no longer needed. Never share one-time codes with someone claiming to be support. If compromise is suspected, secure the associated email account as well, revoke suspicious access, and follow the platform’s official recovery steps. Security badges or direct messages are not proof that a contact is genuine.
